Cross Country Weekly Update = Week 3: 8/31/2020

8/30/2020

Dear Runners and Parents,

I hope everyone has had a good weekend.  I know that some are disappointed in the decision made to shut down last week, but all we can do is make the best of the situations put in front of us.  With that being said you need to make each day matter moving forward so that when we are cleared to run again we are ready to race.
Update
I don't have much to update you on as we are in a holding pattern until September 9th.  If I hear more before then I will be sure to relay that information to you.

Practice and XC Google Classroom
I have made a Google Classroom for the cross country team and invited all the runners to it.  If you do not see it next time you log into Google Classroom please let me know.  I have posted all the workouts for the week along with paces and videos to help understand different terms.  Our drills and core workouts are also posted for everyone.  I will be adding to some of the workouts so please read each workout each day before you complete it.  I may ask you to post a picture of your watch time or fill in a chart for your workout.  Also, once you complete the work out mark it as done.  Please let me know if you have questions about a workout.(Double check it the day before as I will be adding more to the workouts. Monday's workout is set)

PLEASE be smart about your workouts.  If you are on the roads please be extra cautious and pay attention to your surroundings. Be SMART, be SAFE.

Moving Forward

8/26/2020

Dear Runners and Parents,

I have been trying to avoid this email all night.  I want to start by saying THANK YOU.  Thank you to the runners and parents for following all the rules and doing all that we have asked of you whether it be wearing a mask or not being able to be present at meets.  We have followed the rules and stayed safe.  We are are not shut down because of anything that any one of us has done. So again Thank You!.

WHAT I KNOW
At the moment we are shut down until September 9th due the rise in cases within the the townships that feed Hartland High School.  I am hoping that they may reevaluate things before that date, but I am not going to plan on it at this point.  So with that being said practice and meets will not resume until we have clearance.

MOVING FORWARD
This only affects one meet which was scheduled for this weekend against Salem.  My hope is we come out of, for a lack of a better term, quarantine by September 9th and we are able t to race on September 12th.  That ,means that each runner must move forward and continue training on their own so that we are ready to go on the 12th.  Below is the weekly workout link.  This will be updated this weekend for next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them.

Cross Country 2020 Season Update = Week 1: 8/10/2020

8/9/2020

Dear Runners and Parents,

At this moment we are hopeful that cross country is one of the sports that will be able to proceed this fall.  We will find out more on August 20th when the MHSAA comes out with their proceed to competition announcement.  Our first scheduled meet is now Saturday August 29th at Willow Metro park.  We are going to train and be ready in the hopes we can start the season. The MHSAA has asked that we move forward with a dual meet only season at this time so as of right now we have 7 duals scheduled on Saturdays.  The schedule has been updated. I will know more about times, courses, and spectator guidelines in the next couple weeks.  As of now we may not be able to have spectators.  We will find a live stream option if this is the case.  In the meantime, please know we are doing everything so that your child has the opportunity to compete.

PlanetHS/Big teams registration:  This must be done before Thursday to be able to continue to practice.  If you had a physical on file at the middle school or high school last year you do not need to get one this year.  You must go on and fill out all the waivers and upload the 2020 health appraisal form.  You can fill this out online, click save and then upload or you can print the attached copy, fill it out and then take a picture to upload.  Please let me know if you have questions and please see the attachments.

Camp Week Info/Schedule Update

8/6/2020

Dear Parents and Runners,

There will be a lot of information over the next week, so please bear with me. First please see the schedule for camp week below.  It is not perfect but gives us some opportunities away from Hartland High school and some time for fun together.

Camp Week Schedule
Also please fill out a short survey so I know the days you plan on attending for planning purposes.

Camp week attendance Survey

Staring Monday =  Social distancing and Masks on or available will be the policy.  When we leave our cars until the run starts it will now be mandatory to have a mask on. After the run as long as you are 6 feet apart then the mask can stay off for stretching. When not running I expect a mask to be close enough that you can put it on if we are doing activities that require us within 6 feet.  These guidelines come from the MHSAA and Hartland High School. Please email with concerns or doctors notes.
  • We must maintain 6 feet of distance from one another at ALL times.
  • Runners will wear a facemask to practice.  Once the workout starts they may remove it.

Sport Mask Options.(Some have asked about masks while they are running, while not mandatory below are some options if you would like something. I don't know much about any of them other than website and recommendations, just passing along options)

https://respro.com/  (Can be used with asthma according to website)
https://u2sportmask.com/product/u2-sport-mask/ (Galen Rupp wore this in a 10k championship race)
https://bluebearprotection.com/ (Suggested for sports)

Planet HS = All runners need to have the Planeths.com info filled out by Thursday.  If you had a physical last year all you have to do is fill out the 2020 health form, save it and then upload it.

Season Schedule = I will update the season schedule later tonight.  What I can tell you is that we will  be racing on Saturdays in a dual; meet format.  We do not know times yet.  We will not know that for another week or so.

Last thing I have created a document that has as much information that you may need and I will continue to update it.  For a lack of a better word I have called it COVID XC UPDATES and Documents.  This will be at the bottom of each email with the schedule.

HARTLAND XC UPDATE = Summer Week 10

8/2/2020

Happy August!  I have been waiting on sharing information with you (and spending too much time thinking about it, to be honest) because so much has been changing and so many variables are still unknown.  At this time, I'm going to share with you everything I know in an effort to have us ready for our season on August 12th.

Let's start with the easy:
- Non-Mandatory Conditioning Runs will continue this week, Monday through Friday at Epley Park, .  Please continue to fill out the  DAILY HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE   each morning prior to conditioning.

Movie Night at the Ewing's: The Ewing's had invited all cross country runners to a socially distancing movie night on August 9th.  Please RSVP by August 2nd. See the attached flier for more info or link. Movie Night Info

XC Season Sign-Up: Time to register on PlanetHS for the upcoming season.
  •  Both Athlete and Parent must sign-in and fill out the medical history and waiver section.
  • You DO NOT need a physical this season if you have one on file from last school year including middle schoolers)
  • You need a physical only if you did not have one in the last year and have it on your account.
  • See link or attachment for account sign-up if new to Hartland or did play a high school sport last year. PlanetHS Getting Started
  • If you have any questions please let me know.

MILEAGE
We track mileage from Sunday to Saturday each week and then enter a total for the week on Saturday.  The mileage log and Totals are below and up to date.

Mileage Log
Mileage Totals(Are updated)

- Our season officially begins on August 12 and practice is required at that point.

- We are planning on a Parent/Athlete Meeting (virtually) on The week of August 10th pm to try to answer as many questions as possible. A time and date will come later.

The More Difficult:
This week, the MHSAA announced protocols for competitions for cross country.
  • OVERVIEW OF IMPORTANT RETURN TO PLAY TOPICS
  • 2020 Race Management Considerations

We were eagerly awaiting this information as it pertains to the competition phase of our season.  The short of it: we can have races with 70 or less athletes at a time but we still must follow the (current) 100 person capacity guidelines set by the State of Michigan.  This is going to be a MONUMENTAL TASK to pull off and the KLAA is exploring how to change our schedule to make it happen.  It is entirely possible that we are running dual meets only until at least October.  We are also asking for guidance from the state on what this means for spectators.  The good news is that at least we know the parameters we are working with!

Due to these new restrictions, many invitationals we were planning on attending have already been canceled(AARC Early Bird, Rambling Rock Invitational, Portage Invite, and Post-A-PR)  and my guess is many more are on the horizon.

This will be a MAJOR change but it is something and I am confident that KLAA Athletic Leadership will create a schedule that makes sense and follows the MHSAA guidelines.  Once our schedule is more set, I'll let you know.

The Even More Difficult:

Hartland is still deciding what our return-to-school plan looks like. Right now we have in person Monday-Thursday or virtual options.  There is another school board meeting tomorrow morning at 8:00am to possibly finalize the plan, but until that happens it is difficult to plan too much.

The difficulty for us as this relates to Cross Country is that we don't know yet what a "normal" day will look like this fall so I can't tell you what practice is going to look like yet either.  As soon as I have more information I will share a finalized daily schedule with you.  Below is what my rough plan is.  I will also be sending out details for next week by Wednesday of this week.

Current daily schedule through September 13(Subject to Change frequently)

Wow, that was a whole lot of information.  I hope it was helpful (and not overwhelming) and that you made it to the end.

I will continue to communicate any upcoming changes to you as I know about them.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
